BSW Optoelectronics Empowers Infrastructure Upgrading in Ethiopia

Apr 22, 2026
Recently, a municipal delegation from Ethiopia visited Jiangsu BSW Optoelectronics Group to inspect the company’s manufacturing strength, product portfolio and overseas project implementation capabilities. Both sides reached important consensus on deepening cooperation in outdoor lighting and intelligent transportation, and jointly exploring the East African market. As a leading Chinese enterprise deeply engaged in the African market, BSW has implemented a number of benchmark projects in Ethiopia with customized solutions and full-process service capabilities, becoming a key partner in local infrastructure upgrading.
Located on the East African Plateau, Ethiopia is home to the headquarters of the African Union and an important hub for the Belt and Road Initiative in East Africa. Endowed with abundant sunshine in a tropical savanna climate, the country still suffers from weak power grid infrastructure, with electricity coverage in rural and remote areas below 30%. Shortages of night lighting and prominent travel safety risks have created urgent demand for stable, energy-saving and locally adaptable outdoor lighting solutions. Precisely addressing these market pain points, BSW has developed all-in-one solar street lights, smart multi-function poles and other core products tailored to Ethiopia’s high temperature, sandy weather and unstable power supply in some regions, providing local communities with lighting solutions that require no cabling, support self-power supply and deliver long service life.
In the municipal road lighting project in Oromia Region, Ethiopia, BSW provided customized 7m 60W all-in-one solar street lights. Adopting thickened hot-dip galvanizing plus outdoor electrostatic spraying for dual anti-corrosion treatment, the products adapt well to the local high-humidity and dusty environment, with a service life of lamp poles exceeding 15 years. Equipped with high-conversion monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic panels and long-life lithium iron phosphate batteries, the system achieves self-generation and independent power supply, completely solving power shortages in remote areas. Intelligent light control and motion sensor functions enable automatic lighting at night, full brightness when people pass by and energy-saving mode when no one is around, balancing lighting performance and energy consumption. The project covers 3 key municipal roads and 12 rural main roads in Oromia Region, with a total of 860 solar street lights installed, illuminating over 40 kilometers of roads and benefiting more than 200,000 local residents.
Since completion, the project has ended the local dilemma of “no lights at night, traveling by flashlight”. Road traffic accidents have dropped by more than 60%, and nighttime commercial activity has significantly improved. Markets and shops have extended business hours by 3 to 4 hours, boosting the development of the local micro-economy. Meanwhile, the clean energy solution reduces carbon emissions by more than 1,200 tons per year, supporting Ethiopia’s green development goals. It has been highly recognized by Ethiopian municipal authorities and local communities, and honored as a “China-Ethiopia Cooperation Model Project for People’s Livelihood”.
In the intelligent transportation upgrading project in Addis Ababa, BSW delivered a “multi-pole integration” smart pole solution integrating LED lighting, public security monitoring, traffic capture, public information release and environmental monitoring, supporting the capital’s smart city construction. In the first phase, 120 smart multi-function poles were installed along 2 main roads and key business districts in Addis Ababa, realizing integrated management of lighting, security and traffic control, improving urban governance efficiency and public safety, and setting a benchmark for smart city development in Ethiopia.
As a national high-tech enterprise, BSW holds a full range of qualifications including Class I Qualification for Urban and Road Lighting Engineering and Class B Qualification for Lighting Engineering Design. The company has passed ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 international management system certifications, and its products have passed authoritative tests such as CE, CCC and RoHS, fully complying with market access standards in Ethiopia and East Africa. With a full industrial chain covering R&D, manufacturing, engineering construction and after-sales maintenance, BSW can independently undertake large-scale overseas municipal projects without relying on third parties, ensuring efficient and high-quality project delivery.
For Ethiopia and the East African market, BSW has built a one-stop overseas service system: on-site survey, customized solutions and drawing optimization in the early stage; strict production quality control, third-party testing, logistics and customs clearance in the middle stage; on-site installation and commissioning, remote technical support and long-term operation and maintenance in the later stage, forming a full-process closed-loop service that effectively reduces customers’ project management costs and cooperation risks. Meanwhile, the company has set up a local service team in Ethiopia to ensure rapid response to customer needs and solve product operation and maintenance issues, guaranteeing stable long-term project operation.
The visit of the Ethiopian delegation represents high recognition of BSW’s product strength, project experience and service capabilities. Both sides reached multiple agreements for future cooperation: expanding the application of all-in-one solar street lights, smart multi-function poles and other products in Ethiopia to cover more urban main roads, rural roads and industrial parks; jointly conducting technical research to optimize product performance for the East African Plateau climate and launch more customized solutions adapted to local needs; establishing a regional service center in East Africa to provide more efficient technical support and maintenance services for Ethiopia and neighboring countries.
With years of deep cultivation in Africa, BSW has delivered benchmark projects in Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon, Ethiopia and other countries, building a strong brand reputation with high-quality products, customized solutions and comprehensive services. Going forward, the company will continue to take quality as the foundation and innovation as the driving force, deeply participate in infrastructure construction in Ethiopia and East Africa, light up the night sky of East Africa with Chinese intelligent manufacturing, deepen China-Africa cooperation with concrete actions, help improve local livelihoods and boost economic development, and write a new chapter of win-win progress between China and Africa.
